Circle of Gillis van Coninxloo

(Antwerp 1544 - 1608 Amsterdam)

A Shepherd with his Flock on a Pathway through a Wood

Oil on panel 19 ½ x 26 ½ ins. (50 x 68 cm)

Christie’s, 26th June 1970
Private collection, Guernsey, 1970-2021

An early purchase by the collector, which possibly stirred his enthusiasm for Flemish landscapes.  It is very close indeed to the Brueghel follower Gillis van Coninxloo and is entirely consistent with his heavily wooded landscapes for which he was well known. He was made a member of the Antwerp Guild in 1570, and Jan Brueghel the Elder was clearly very influenced by his subject matter as well as his technique.
