This bird’s eye view of the Flemish landscape with a village in the foreground is typical of Bol’s miniaturist style. He often worked in gouache on paper, but in this instance has chosen the medium of oil on canvas and has managed to encapsulate a vast area into a small panorama only 33 centimetres across. The view of Antwerp and its harbour in the distance is beautifully expressed at the end of the winding River Scheldt and the estuary that leads up to it.
